about

Mars was formed in late 1975, the first of the bands included later on the NO NEW YORK compilation. Between January 77 and December 78 they played 30 or so gigs without leaving Manhattan and recorded a total of 32 minutes of music, spread over three discs, now available for the first time in its entirety on this collection, originally released by Mars member Mark Cunningham as a CD in Barcelona (G3G 2004), later as a limited, numbered vinyl edition on Important Records, and then again as a CD on NO More Records.
RECORDS:
The first single (3E, 11000 volts), was recorded and mixed by Jay Dee Daugherty and Brooke Delarco under the impulse of Lenny Kaye for their label with Patti Smith, Mer in September 77, and later released as a Rebel 7" and a ZE 12”.
The four tracks on the NO NEW YORK LP, Helen Fordsdale, Hairwaves, Tunnel and Puerto Rican Ghost were recorded and produced by Brian Eno in June 78.
The MARS EP, on Charles Ball’s Lust/Unlust label, was recorded in December 78 in one live session and was the last time the band played together. The songs were N.N. End, Scorn, Outside Africa, Monopoly and Immediate Stages of the Erotic.
